ATTN Attorneys: 6 Analytics Myths Dispelled

Regularly reviewing website analytic data can be essential to continually reshaping and updating Internet marketing strategies to make a website as visible and successful as possible – both in search engines and to potential new clients.

Because, however, analytic data can come in many forms – and because there can be a lot to glean from it, it can be as confusing as it may be overwhelming, particularly for those who are just starting to delve into the analytics world. What can make matters more complicated is that there are a lot of misconceptions out there about analytics and how to use this data.

To clear up some of these misconceptions, this two-part blog series will debunk some of the most common (and harmful) myths about analytics. While the discussion herein reveals some important insights about analytics, please don’t hesitate to contact Epic Web Results for experienced help evaluating analytics and using this data to make your Internet marketing efforts as successful as possible.

Don’t Buy into these Analytics Myths

Myth 1 – A math background is necessary to understand analytics.

Fact – Wrong! You don’t need a math degree to understand website analytics, and there are many tools currently available that can assemble the analytics data you need/are looking for. In fact, if you are really serious about delving into the analytics world:

  • You can take classes or seminars that teach you how to collect and evaluate analytics data.
  • Working with experienced Internet marketing professionals (like those at Epic Web Results) can provide you with the analytics data and insight you need – and this can be the best option when you need to focus on running your business.

Myth 2 – Analytics don’t reveal any new info about a site.

Fact – Wrong again! Although you may have some general ideas about what is working or not working on your website, reviewing analytics for a site on a regular basis can:

  • Quantify just how successful (or unsuccessful) certain elements of a site are
  • Reveal what channels, campaigns and/or pages are performing better (or worse) in search engines (and among users)
  • Detail what areas of a site (or which specific campaigns) may need to be revised or revamped in order to perform better.

Myth 3 – It takes way too much time to review and understand analytics.

Fact – This is also false. While analytics can take up a lot of time if you don’t know which metrics to be measuring and evaluating, when you have these aspects dialed in, analytic data can be routinely – and relatively quickly – measured.

Check out the upcoming conclusion to this blog series for some more facts behind common analytics myths. In the meantime, share your comments on this subject with us on Facebook and Google+.

Myth 4 – My company is small, so analytics really won’t benefit it.

Fact – Wrong! Regardless of the size of a business, regularly reviewing analytic data can be extremely beneficial. This is because, with this data, businesses can get a clear picture of:

  • Which campaigns, content and other Internet marketing efforts are working
  • What efforts have fallen short of their goals
  • What needs to be done to get the unsuccessful efforts back on track.

In fact, smaller companies may benefit just as much as larger businesses from analytics data, as this data can be pivotal to helping businesses improve their online presence and, in doing so, attracting new customers/clients and growing their businesses.

Myth 5 – Every analytics metric needs to be evaluated and addressed.

Fact – Wrong again! In the world of analytics, there are countless metrics that can be assessed and reported on. However, not all of this data will be important or even relevant to you and your business. The key is to determine what metrics are important to a given website/business (based on its goals and overall marketing strategies) and then to focus on these metrics moving forward.

While this will streamline the analytics process, it can also help generate the greatest returns on business’ Internet marketing investments.

Myth 6 – Nothing needs to be done once I have analytics data.

Fact – This may be one of the most dangerous analytics myths to believe, as it can subvert a business’ Internet marketing efforts. The fact is that, once analytics data has been generated, it has to be used to drive content decisions, develop new campaigns and continue to improve a business’ Internet marketing strategies. Having data for the sake of data will do nothing to help grow a business online.
