Google has just confirmed that it is conducting a “small experiment” with Twitter content, integrating tweets in its search results for some trending topics. This experiment is just one of the manifestations of a deal that Google made with Twitter back in February, which granted Google access to the Twitter “firehose” of content. This firehose reportedly includes more than 6,000 tweets per minute.

Recently, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo noted that the deal between Google and Twitter would probably result in new Twitter content uses in May. The news of Google’s experiment has confirmed Costolo’s forecasts.

Speaking to its “small” experiment, Google noted via email:

As mentioned in Twitter’s earnings call back in January, we’ve partnered to bring their real-time content to Google Search. We’ve started some small experiments in mobile search, but we don’t have more to announce at this point.

Impacts of Showing Twitter Content in Google Search Results

So, why all of this important? Well, first off, it seems to be another step that Google is taking to in its ongoing effort to bring users relevant information. Given that tweets can deliver timely content that people want to search for, showing tweets in search results can help deliver more pertinent content to people who are looking for it.

Additionally, however, showing tweets in search results may end up helping Google identify other related, quality content outside of Twitter, which will further enhance the efforts to deliver the most appropriate results and info for a given search.

However, Google and Google users are not going to be the only ones to benefit from the Google-Twitter deal (and the rollout of new ways of using Twitter content in search results). Twitter will likely be benefiting from this in that it will see a lot more traffic, which it can then use to attract new users, show people more ads, etc.

What do you think about this foray into new uses of Twitter content? Do you think it will be useful to see tweets in search results? We want to know what you think – share your thoughts and comments on this with us on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
