4 Steps to Registering a Law Firms Domain Name (Part 1)

When you are ready to develop a website for your business, one of the first things you will need to do is to register a domain name for your website. A domain name is the specific URL or internet address where your website will be found.

Here and in a second part of this blog to come, we will discuss how to register a domain name for your business. If you have questions about this process or need help developing an optimized website that will give your business a powerful online presence, don’t hesitate to contact the professionals at Epic Web Results.

Step 1: Think of a few possible domain names you want.

Because you will be registering a specific domain name, you first need to determine what URL you will want for your business. This is generally a more complicated and important step than it may initially seem to be, as the choice you make for your domain name should be:

  • Relevant to your business, including both your industry and your specific business name
  • Easy to remember (especially if you want your existing and potential customers to repeatedly visit your website).

Depending on the nature of your business, it may be a good idea to include your last name as part of the URL and/or to include your specific location as part of the domain name. For example, if you are a Denver attorney named John Smith, then possible domain names that you may want to register for your law firm (let’s say it is Smith Law) could be SmithLaw.com, SmithLawDenver.com or DenverAttorneyJohnSmith.com.

Because your top choice for a domain name may already be taken, make sure you come up with a few viable options for URLs for your business website so you don’t run into any roadblocks as you move forward to try to register a domain name.

Step 2: Check the availability of your desired domain names.

Once you have a list of about 3 to 5 possible URLs for your business, it’s time to check to see what is available. This means that you will need to visit an official domain name registrar to find out which domain names are available for purchase (since you have to buy URL names annually, “rent” is probably a more apt term here).
