Continuing from Six SEO Metrics That Matter (Part 1)¸ the following presents and discusses two important SEO metrics and how they matter to assessing the overall quality and success of your website. By carefully analyzing these metrics, you can get a better idea of the specific changes you may need to make to your website in order to improve its ranking in search engines and its ability to convert Internet users into future customers and clients.

  • Metric 3: Backlinking – Also referred to as incoming links, backlinks refer to links from other websites to your website. When ranking your website in search engines, algorithms will typically consider how many other websites are linking to your site as a manner of indicating how relevant, credible and compelling your content is. However, it’s important to point out that, with this SEO metric, quality can be far more important than quantity. In other words, instead of trying to garner as many backlinks as possible, it’s far better to choose a few really high-quality backlinks (i.e., links from respected sources like, for example, usnews.com). If you make the unfortunate mistake of going for quantity over quality, you run the risk of actually hurting your website’s rankings, as algorithms may view this excessive backlinking as being related to spam.
  • Metric 4: Bounce Rates – Bounce is the term used to refer to the situations in which an Internet user clicks on a link to a website and then quickly leaves that site (which can occur, for example, when the site is not at all what the user may actually be looking for). The bounce rate, then, describes how often this occurs and, consequently, gives an indication of whether the title tags and descriptions for your website’s pages accurately reflect the content provided therein. The goal with this metric is to have a low bounce rate, meaning that users who visit your website are finding the information they are looking for.
